Looking tor themes m my life for writing. Not literary/ ideas for a story, but the real life. For me, however, writing and life go together. For example, in 1986 I started traveling in a motor home for the purpose of writing Lessons From The Road. The literary plan came first and die lifestyle followed.

In 1976, my spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, asked me to write a book. He called me into his room in the Detroit temple and said, “I want you to write another book. It should be about how all things fail without Krsna.” Prabhupada gave a few examples of what he meant, how worldly schemes collapse due to the lack of Krsna consciousness.

I want to study this evolution of my art, my writing. I want to see what changed from the book In Search of the Grand Metaphor to the next book, The Last Days of the Year.

I want to go to a place where a story is flowing, and I stay there with it and report in my inimitable way. When I come back from that place I feel better, able to cope with the political thoughts of the day and threats to my being. (As I write this, a jet fighter streaks and burrows mole-like through the air).

In one day from now, I’ll have in my hand a novel by Italo Svevo, probably his Confessions of Zeno. Let me tell you about Svevo as an Introduction to our Summer Marathon.

The reader will find this book a delightful composition of anecdotal history, intimate recollections, conversational prayers, and commentary on photographs of His Divine Grace Abhay Caranaravinda Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the beloved Founder-Acarya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness.

Since translating Visnu-rdta Vijaya, I have heard that there are many other unpublished manuscripts throughout Bharata-varsa. They are mostly biographies, diaries, and family histories of devotees who had a connection with events described in the Vedic scriptures. I hope to continue translating authentic manuscripts that have relevance to our present-day experience.

I want this to be a diary for writing letters to Pra-bhupada, talking to him, praying to him, sometimes speaking to him in the first person and sometimes in the third person. Some of my thoughts may be sentimental, but I want to speak to him anyway because good words, good attempts, will lead to good actions.

I like to draw people walking. Or, it’s not that I like to draw them; they just seem to come. We read of artists going through phases. Picasso had a pink phase, a blue phase, and a cubist phase. An artist might draw the same image for years until he got through with it—maybe a door until he opened it—some image from life that has meaning.
